Which Laptop for Office Work? What You Really Need — and What's a Waste of Money
What office work actually demands from a laptop
Every month, a pile of company laptops passes through our repair shop. When you look at what people actually do on them — email, Excel, Word, a browser with twenty tabs, a Zoom call, maybe some business software — the picture is clear. Office work doesn’t call for a beast of a machine. It calls for a laptop that wakes up fast, doesn’t choke when you open a third program, and doesn’t fall apart from being carried to meetings.
Here’s what matters, in order of importance:
- An SSD. Non-negotiable. A laptop with a regular hard drive is pure torture today, no matter what processor it has.
- Enough RAM. Browsers and Teams are memory-hungry. This is the spec people skimp on most often — and the one you feel the most.
- A decent screen and keyboard. You stare at one and type on the other all day long. A poor screen tires your eyes; a mushy keyboard tires your nerves.
- Battery and weight. If the laptop travels to meetings and client sites, this outranks everything else.
What you shouldn’t pay for
A powerful graphics card for Excel? Not needed. RGB keyboard lighting? Not needed. The latest processor generation „just in case“? In office work you won’t see the difference — but you’ll certainly see it in the price. A gaming laptop on an office desk is a common mistake — loud, heavy, with a battery that barely survives one meeting. If you genuinely need power for video editing or 3D modeling, that’s a job for a workstation, not an office machine.
Business series or consumer models?
In the repair shop, we can spot the difference with the naked eye. Business series — ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook and the like — are built for companies that buy in bulk and expect their equipment to last. Sturdier chassis, better keyboard, easier servicing, parts available for years. Consumer models from big-box stores are often „polish on the outside, cost-cutting on the inside“: a pretty lid, but hinges and plastic that give way quickly under daily carrying.
That’s exactly why our business category is stocked with business-series machines. These are laptops we’d use ourselves — and we do.
The best test: work on it for a week
No spec sheet will tell you whether the screen tires your eyes, whether the keyboard suits you, or whether the battery lasts through your actual workday. You only find that out by doing real work on the laptop. So before you buy — try it.
With us, you rent a laptop by the day, week or month, and the daily rate drops the longer the period. The exact price is listed on each laptop’s page, and all rates are public in the rental price list. Take the model you’re interested in, work on it, then decide at your own pace. And if you’re still weighing rental against buying in the first place, we’ve laid that out in our guide renting vs. buying a laptop.
How it works in practice
We sign a rental agreement, you leave a refundable deposit that we return when the equipment comes back in working order. Individuals need an ID card or passport; companies need their tax ID and registration number — companies get a contract and an invoice, payment by bank transfer. If you end up needing the laptop longer, extending is easy to arrange.
Pick it up at one of our three stores in Belgrade or have it delivered by courier anywhere in Serbia. Before every handover, each laptop is cleaned, tested and set up — BG Computers repair shop stands behind all of it, so the guarantee of working condition comes from people who fix laptops every day. That same combination also means that while your own laptop is in for repair with us, you can take a replacement laptop and not lose working days.
Equipping an office or a team?
For companies setting up workstations, taking on seasonal staff or waiting for new equipment to arrive, renting several units is often a smarter first step than buying blind. We’ve gathered the details on our laptop rental for companies page.
